B-Fest '97!

MADNESS INCARNATE!!

On Jan. 31 - Feb. 1, starting at 6:00 PM (Central), A&O Film Board will once again host their annual 24-hour B-movie marathon at the McCormick Auditorium in the Norris University Center, Northwestern University 1999 South Campus Drive in Evanston, Illinois.

Tickets: $10 advance, $12 at the door. Free parking aplenty.

Started in the early '80s, this marathon is something I look forward to every year. The features are a satisfying mix of regular favorites that are shown every year, many flix I've never seen on a big screen, at least a few that I've never seen at all, and some not-on-video rarities that hardly anybody's seen since they were released. Plus many shorts and the traditional WIZARD freakout rituals (ya gotta be there). The McCormick is a fairly modern, comfortable theater, not a crackerbox but not a barn. Technically, the presentation depends on available equipment - I'm hoping the widescreen projectors (and proper lenses) will be available this year.

Hands are stamped at the entrance, so you can come and go at will, except for a few later hours when the building is locked and you'll have to be let back in. I believe a commemorative t-shirt will be available this year, as has been the case the last couple years (they look great, they help support the cost of film rentals, and they're cheap - get 'em while they last).

There are 3 or 4 regular intermissions, including a longer breakfast break when the adjoining cafeteria reopens in the morning. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and (non-alc) bevs. Some folks even have pizzas delivered! Also, if you plan to stick thru 'til the end, it's a good idea to bring a blanket, a spare shirt, and toiletries. A schedule is available at the entrance, so non-die-hards can pick their slot to grab a nap, either out in the lounge or just anywhere you want to stretch out.

The atmosphere - well, it's kind of like a big slumber party on the Satellite o' Love. Some say the B-Fest was one of the main inspirations for MST3K (some of the writers are from Chicagoland), as wiseguys try to out-smartass each other and many hilarious interactive skits are performed for the amusement of all. I doubt if Siskel or Ebert will be there, but you should be!

The B-Fest schedule is as follows:

  1. Invasion of the Bee Girls - Lots of buzz attended the release of this film in the swingin' '70s.
  2. You Are What You Eat - Rare hippy movie - narrated by the late Tiny Tim.
  3. Mystery Feature - It was supposed to be Bucket of Blood, but it became unavailable for some reason. Who knows what it will be??
  4. Terror of Tiny Town - No one really knows why this was the only all-midget Western ever made.
  5. Mysterious Mr. Wong - Bela Lugosi stars in this 1930s Poverty Row thriller, based on a story by bizarre Chicago author Harry Stephen Keeler.
  6. Radio Ranch - Feature version of the weird Gene Autrey serial
  7. War of the Planets - From now on July 4th will no longer be just an American holiday...
  8. Sex Madness - And you thought it was only dangerous to sleep around in the '90s - get a load of what folks in the '30s went through.
  9. It Came From Outer Space - Classic early Fifties sci-fi.
  10. Jason & the Argonauts - You'll go Argo-nuts when you see this mythological epic.
  11. Mothra - Classic Japanese big bug fable - recently remade.
  12. Attack of the Mushroom People - Is it a classic of mood and atmosphere, or just plain silly? I'd say it's both!
  13. Reefer Madness - Just the thing to follow all those mushrooms.
  14. They Saved Hitler's Brain - Patched together nightmare project that used to haunt the late, late show.
  15. Plan 9 From Outerspace - Ed Wood's magnum opus. "This is the one they'll remember me for."
  16. Reptilicus! - A beast from the dawn of time attacks the center of modern civilization: Denmark!
  17. Three Stooges Hour - Your tired eyes should be ready for a good poke by this time.
  18. Flesh Gordon - The memorable Adults Only parody.
  19. Glen or Glenda? - A different kind of TV show. Also known as: I Changed My Sex and The Transvestite.

See y'all there!
